We were delighted to see that the Queen’s Birthday Honours list, which was announced on Saturday 15 June 2013, included a bumper crop of ten dance names recognised for their outstanding work in dance across a wide variety of contexts in Britain. Those honored ranged from local dance teachers to the Chief Executive of Scottish Ballet.
Those awarded an honour included:
Jeanette Siddall was awarded a CBE for services to dance. Jeanette Siddall is the former Director of Dance UK and also won this year’s Dance UK Jane Attenborough Industry Award, which is an award given by other dance professionals to one of their peers in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the industry beyond their job.
Jeanette said: “I am delighted by this honour, and thrilled to be in the company of so many people from such different aspects of dance who have been honoured in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List. It is fantastic that dance has been recognised in this way. The congratulations from so many people I have worked with and admired over the years makes the honour really special.”
Gailene Stock Director of the Royal Ballet School was awarded a CBE for services to Dance.
Lloyd Newson, Founder and Director of DV8 was awarded an OBE for services to contemporary dance. Eva Pepper, DV8’s Executive Producer, said: “Originally from Australia, Lloyd has worked in Britain for over thirty years and recently became a British citizen. I know it means a lot to him to be recognised for his dance and theatre work by his adopted country.”
Cindy Sughrue, Chief Executive of Scottish Ballet was awarded an OBE For services to dance. Cindy started her career as a dancer. She said: “I am genuinely moved that my efforts to make a difference to people’s lives have been recognised in this way, though without a team of truly remarkable colleagues alongside, none of the achievements recognised by this OBE would have been possible.”
Kevin Finnan, Artistic Director of Motionhouse was awarded an MBE for services to dance and to the Paralympic Games. Kevin is a mentor of Dance UK’s Dancers’ Mentoring Programme. Kevin said: “I am deeply proud to be able to accept this great honour from Her Majesty The Queen, and I’d like to dedicate my MBE to everybody who has contributed to Motionhouse’s success leading up to this, our 25th anniversary year.”
Richard Glasstone, choreographer, teacher & author has been awarded by MBE for services to classical ballet.
Peter Huggins, Associate Director of Dance City in Newcastle was awarded an MBE for services to British dance.
Birmingham based Irish dance teacher Norah Brennan was awarded by OBE for services to dance.
Wolverhampton based Sheila May Labhart was awarded by OBE for services to dance & charity.
Caryl Thomas was awarded an OBE for services to the Cardris Dance Club, Resolven, Neath Port Talbot and to charity.
Howard Panter, the co-founder of the Ambassador Theatre Group and Chair of Rambert Dance Company has been made a knight in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list for his services to theatre. Howard has been a driving force in the fundraising and building of Rambert Dance Company’s new building on the Southbank which is due to open later this year.
