Dance Your City 3: The Live Finals!

Posted: March 9, 2015

Saturday 28th February saw the live finals of the third edition of our competition Dance Your City!

This year was particularly exciting for us as the winners of the competition were to perform the opening curtain raiser for Boy Blue Entertainment’s ‘A Night with Boy Blue’ live on the Barbican Centre stage. To offer young dance performers from around the country an opportunity to perform on an internationally recognised stage was a huge deal to us here at DTP.

The three finalists were RDC Youth Dance from Birmingham, Freeman Dance from Coventry and Hall For Cornwall Youth Dance from Cornwall. You can click on each company to see their video entry for the competition.

It was a fantastic day, where not only did each group get to perform to a crowd at the Barbican Centre, they got to watch A Night with Boy Blue and be inspired by other young dancers performing together. We really hope that every Dance Your City performer was inspired by the dancing happening on the day, from each other, Boy Blue and the Boy Blue students also.
Claire from DTP said about the day “The quality and intent of the work presented by the three finalists for Dance Your City [DYC3] was inspiring and received huge cheers from the audience watching the event on the Freestage at the Barbican.  All of the judges were impressed by the performances and it was a close run contest which saw Freeman Dance win the overall prize to perform as the curtain raiser for Boy Blue Entertainment’s evening performance of  ‘A Night with Boy Blue’.

Dance Your City celebrated DTP’s aim to create great experiences and wider opportunities to connect and engage with dance and companies, as part of its collaborative approach to work with artists and venues to tour and provide access to the best possible work across the UK.”

Awarded second place was Hall for Cornwall Youth Dance Company. Their piece of work was represented the area of the UK that they come from. Many of the performers in this group had never visited London before so the Dance Your City finals were an extra special day!

“Being part of Dance Your City has been life changing for some of our HFCYDC dancers, and I don’t say that lightly! The whole experience of making new work about where we are from, right through to performing it at the Barbican has been an awesome journey, and something they won’t ever forget. DTP are providing something really special for young dancers to see such high quality dance work and to allow them the opportunities to perform alongside them is amazing. We cannot thank DTP enough for the opportunity”  – Helen Tiplady. Artistic Director of HFCYDC

The overall winners of Dance Your City 3 were Freeman Dance!

“What an amazing day at the finals of Dance Your City 2015! The competition was really well organised, everyone was so friendly and we were really well looked after throughout the whole day! It was great to meet the other finalists, everyone was really supportive and encouraging to each other, and everyone gave great performances.  We were absolutely thrilled to be this years winners and have the opportunity to dance on stage at the Barbican, opening the evening show for the incredible Blue Boy Ent!  We had been given tickets to watch their matinee and everyone was so impressed and inspired by the dancing in it, that when we were also invited to join the warm up on stage with the cast of the show, and made to feel so welcome, it made the day extra special. The staff at the Barbican were fantastic too and the whole day was just amazing.Thank you so much to Dance Touring Partnership, Blue Boy Ent. and the Barbican theatre.  The experience of winning the competition, meeting so many inspiring dancers and performing on the Barbican stage has had a huge impact on our young dancers, giving them more confidence, inspiring them with determination to work even harder on their dance abilities, and given them great memories of a brilliant day!”

Thank you so much to everyone that took part in Dance Your City 3, your entries make the competition possible! We shall see you next time!
