There is just one month until the fabulous Canadian 2b theatre company open the UK tour of their award-winning OLD STOCK: A Refugee Love Story at Warwick Arts Centre in Coventry on 9 October. This funny, thought-provoking folktale mixed with a high-energy klezmer concert takes a divisive comment by a Canadian politician as its starting point. 2b theatre company director Christian Barry, playwright Hannah Moscovitch and musician Ben Caplan created the show in 2015 to explore what the term ‘old stock Canadians’ really means in a country founded on immigration. |

Inspired by the real-life story of playwright Hannah Moscovitch’s great-grandparents Chaim and Chaya, who immigrated to Canada in 1908 as Jewish Romanian refugees, OLD STOCK: A Refugee Love Story asks: How can you love after being broken by the horrors of war? It’s about those who get out before it’s too late, and those who get out after it’s too late. It’s a love story, albeit one with its fair share of loss. Ultimately, it’s about hope and the triumph of the human spirit against all odds. |
