Australian Dance Theatre 28 & 29 November 2008

Garry Stewart's latest work, G, is a powerful reworking of the ballet Giselle. Hysteria, vulnerability, desire, gender, death and the afterlife are embodied by the formidable dancers of Australian Dance Theatre in a seamless interplay of powerful athleticism and deconstructed classicism. The score is accompanied by a running commentary that toys with language codes on hovering screens, reconfiguring the story of the original ballet and its themes.

Hofesh Shechter’s Uprising / In your rooms

Rising star of the contemporary dance world, Hofesh Shechter presents his acclaimed works Uprising and In your rooms. Hotly tipped as dance’s next big thing - his work was recently seen by millions of viewers when he was commissioned to choreograph the opening dance sequence for E4’s hit TV series Skins.

Hofesh Shechter’s Uprising / In your roomsIn your rooms brims with gritty physicality and is at times provocative, political and deeply personal, presenting a society that is scarily alienating and yet shockingly familiar. Twelve dancers reveal shifting motives, lack of control and vulnerabilities through intricate, touching encounters. The work features a hauntingly beautiful original score, created by Shechter in collaboration with Nell Catchpole (The Gogmagogs), performed live on stage by five musicians at some of the venues.

In Uprising seven men emerge from the shadows to bombard the stage with furious energy, bonding and sparring, making up and falling out. This highly charged work, set to a throbbing percussive score also composed by Shechter, leaves audiences buzzing.

Former drummer in a rock band, Hofesh Shechter performed with Israel’s internationally acclaimed Batsheva Dance Company where he worked with choreographers such as Ohad Naharin and Wim Vandekeybus. After several years studying drumming and percussion in Israel and France, he moved to the UK, joining Jasmin Vardimon Dance Company in 2002 and making his choreographic debut in 2004.

“Probably the most important new dance work to be created in Britain since the millennium” Luke Jennings, The Observer, May 2007

“The work is choreographed with such verve that its effect is almost ecstatic…it is an arrestingly powerful piece” Judith Mackrell, The Guardian October 2007

“An A+ for ambition and originality, and cracking performances, too.” Mark Monahan, the Daily Telegraph, October 2007

“Churning with the precision of a well oiled machine, In your rooms delivers a mighty ride of exciting choreographer and equally exciting music” Debra Craine, The Times, October 2007

MICHAEL KEEGAN-DOLAN WINS BEST MODERN CHOREOGRAPHY AWARD FOR THE BULL

Founder and Director of Fabulous Beast Dance Theatre, choreographer Michael Keegan-Dolan has won the prestigious UK National Dance Award for Best Modern Choreography for his production of The Bull

The Bull, based on the legend of The Táin, played at the Barbican in February 2007 and was co-produced by the Dublin Theatre Festival and bite07. It premiered at the Dublin Theatre Festival in October 2005.

Keegan-Dolan's astonishing physical theatre pieces in collaboration with the Dublin Theatre Festival and The Barbican have included an Olivier-nominated Giselle, The Flowerbed and, most recently, The Bull. His work is challenging, intelligent, shot through with scatological humour and firmly in the narrative tradition.

The CRITICS' CIRCLE NATIONAL DANCE AWARDS are the only professional awards in the UK dedicated specifically to dance, and are presented by the dance section of the Critics' Circle, which brings together more than 50 dance writers. The 2007 awards took place on Tuesday 22 January 2008 at 1pm, at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London.

Press release: Mischief

A brand-new dance show specially made for children. thrilling, colourful and unpredictable

Mischief

by Theatre-Rites and choreographer Arthur Pita
commissioned by Sadler’s Wells and Dance Touring Partnership

National tour from 28 September to 22 November
London premiere at Peacock Theatre on 6 October

Children’s theatre specialists Theatre-Rites and rising choreographer Arthur Pita combine their talents to create Mischief, a fantastic mix of dance moves with visual art, clowning, puppetry, music and song.  Bursting with energy, creative play and magical silliness, this brand-new show for children is perfect for families, friends and schools to share together.

Mischief is performed by seven of the UK’s best contemporary dancers along with composer/musician Charlie Winston (currently on tour with Peter Gabriel), live on stage.  They inhabit a rainbow world of weird shapes and forms where visual artist Sophia Clist transforms simple materials into jaunty characters and mythological creatures, into dark forests, magic caves and much more, accompanied by songs and music.  Feats of theatre and puppetry are interspersed with brilliant, bouncey dancing and forays into the audience.

Mischief is the brainchild of Sadler’s Wells and innovative producers Dance Touring Partnership for both of whom this is the first commission specially for children and families where contemporary dance is firmly at the heart of the theatrical experience.

The award-winning Theatre-Rites has been stirring the imagination of children and adults alike since 1995.   Total Theatre described its work as “grand in scale, beautifully crafted in its detail and as imaginative and rewarding as any company creating work for adults you'll ever hope to see."  Portuguese choreographer Arthur Pita performed lead roles with Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures before launching his own company, Arthur Pita Open Heart, in 2003.  His commissions include Phoenix Dance Theatre, Candoco and The Royal Opera House.
