Jasmin Vardimon is one of the most exciting and accessible choreographers working in the field of contemporary dance and physical theatre today. Recipient of the prestigious 2000 Jerwood Award for Choreography, her work is powerful, unusual and often startling.
Vardimon has choreographed major projects for CandoCo and Welsh Independent Dance, she curated Dance Ballads for the Oval House and has also produced a string of pieces for her own touring Company - including her first full length piece - Lullaby, which continues to tour widely due to popular demand. Apart from her numerous awards, she has also been commissioned by: the Place Theatre, DanceXchange, Oval House, Kampnagel (Germany), Now 2000, The Green Room and Lichfield Garrick. Vardimon is currently a Yorkshire Dance Partner having previously been associate artist at The Place.
A highly skilled dancer, Vardimon herself was nominated for ‘Best Female Artist’ at the 2003 Critics Circle National Dance Awards. Born in Israel, Vardimon danced with the Kibbutz Dance Company for five years before moving to England and forming Zbang in 1997 (later to become Jasmin Vardimon Dance Company).
Vardimon has a recognisable and strongly individual choreographic voice in dance theatre. Her work intertwines dark humour, character-based portrayals, innovative use of projection and surprising and beautifully detailed dance. The movement vocabulary is richly dramatic and engaging and is often violent and moving. Using a variety of Dance Theatre approaches Vardimon has concentrated her work around social definitions of health and sickness, deviancy and morality.
